Impact of Transportation Modes and Barriers for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities on Community Participation |
The purpose of this study is to use both quantitative and qualitative methods to better understand the barriers to transportation and its impact on participation in important life activities for individuals with developmental disabilities. The individuals’ perception of transportation systems is critical to explaining the impact and barriers. Adults with developmental disabilities and/or parents of adults with developmental disabilities will complete a questionnaire and a qualitative interview on the modes of transportation used, barriers to public transportation, and the impact of transportation on community participation, employment and health care.
t is hypothesized that lack of transportation causes the greatest challenge for maintaining employment and participation in the community. It is also hypothesized that participants will report fear and lack of training as critical concerns when using public transportation options. The findings from both the survey and the interview will be used to identify transportation issues and guide in the development of future transportation training programs. |
