Independent travel is a crucial skill for maintaining a positive quality of life and for being able to interact fully in the community. The Kennedy Center identifies 3 main reasons that independent travel is difficult for person with disabilities.
The Kennedy Center’s primary goal is “to empower persons with diverse abilities, disabilities and experiences toward optimal participation and inclusion in the community.” They set out to develop a travel training program designed specifically for people on the autism spectrum. Vertical Divider

With the recognition that there is a need for travel training curriculum specific to individuals with autism, funding was provided by Autism Speaks to develop A Chance to Ride. Since then, A Chance to Ride has served 3500 individuals in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey.
The success of this program is founded on several key principles.
